Leia Costuming
Clothing a Star Wars Obsession: Moulin Rouge: Smoldering Temptress: Skirt
Overall, the skirt was probably the easist part of the costume to make, just four panels and a waistband.

The waistband is just a strip of satin that I doubled over and pinned around my dress form. For the front panel of the skirt, I centered my satin, pinned the top edge to the waistband, and hacked into an A-line—roughly from my hipbones to the selvedges of the material (45" wide). The side and back panels were a little trickier. I cut two pieces roughly the same length (and roughly the same length as the front panel) for the sides, attached them to the waistband and pinned them to the front panel. Again with the scissors, and hacked away at an angle. The back panel I simply centered, pinned to the waistband, and played with the drape until I was happy with it. It ended up having a soft pleat or two at each seam, from the way the fabric hangs. (The back panel is A-line, too.)

For the hem length, I cut it to sit on the floor about three inches at the front and sides and train nearly a foot in back if I stand barefoot. With heels, it's just past floor-length. Rather than hem it entirely by hand—fold up, iron in place, fold up again and stitch down—I used 2"-wide hem binding sewn an inch from the cut edge, then and sewn in place by hand. Made it so much easier to get an even hem all the way around. I've never had much luck with turning up hems on full circle skirts by hand. Plus, the bias binding adds just the tiniest bit of body to the hem of the skirt, and helps protect the fabric from being caught on rough surfaces.

Yet another invisible zipper, inserted into the right side-back seam, to close it. It took forever and a day for me to get it right (sewed it half-way in backwards, unpicked all the stitches, then sewed it in again the exact same way), however. I usually don't have that much trouble with them.
